What would you want from a Rescue site?

This is aimed at both the end users (those trying to find a rescue dog) and at Rescues (those wanting to list their dogs on a leading rescue site).

I've mentioned a few times now that I am thinking about doing a site for Rescues and as the Breed Profile site is now progressing nicely, thought it's about time I started to get feedback for the Rescue one - please take a few minutes to add your thoughts

As an end user
  • What info about the dog would you like to see? (description, height/weight, cat-friendly, background/history, etc?)
  • Photos?
  • Favourite foods?
  • Health / health related history if available
  • Find dogs near you?
  • The Rescues polices? Whether they re-home exbreeders from puppy farmers etc?
  • Anything else?

As a Rescue
  • Easy to use?
  • Help with uploading info?
  • See how many times the dogs info was viewed?
  • Anything else?

And anything else you can think of.

Adoption contract. (Some have stipulations).
Price / donation amount.
Backup available.
What the process is? (Some Rescues just home-check, some require visits from all involved)

I'd like to type in my area and only be able to see the dogs in my area, Rather than name of rescue so then you have to look for where it is!

Will the Rescue take the dog back if it doesn`t work out?
Will the Rescue provide advice?
Does the Rescue have someone to help with behavioural issues if necessary?

Ah right thanks Claire.

Wonder how many actually go that far - I guess the first two would be a given, but 3? (Could cost them a lot?)

As an end user
[*]What info about the dog would you like to see?

Age
Health
Behaviour
Size

all given honestly without spin

[*]Photos?
Yes

[*]Favourite foods?
Not really important

[*]Health / health related history if available
Yes, definitely

[*]Find dogs near you?
Yes, would hate to fall for one that was just too far away

[*]The Rescues polices? Whether they re-home exbreeders from puppy farmers etc?
Not important, but would like to know of the assessments carried out re behaviour

[*]Anything else?
A guide to how much grooming is likely to be required

Most good Rescues will have someone who knows enough to help people with common problems. I know one that runs classes as well.

Many behaviourists give up their time for free when it's to help a rescue centre out

IMHO the best Rescue dog site, is Dogsblog. It is damned near perfect. The only thing I would change, is to be able to do a search for an area
