Long Hike with Adolescent Dog?

Hi,
I'm going on a prayer walk for water in a week. I am bringing my dog Chante, a 9 month old border collie/lab mix. I have read online that people don't recommend taking an adolescent dog who's bones are still growing on a long hike, but this is very important to me and Chante. It will help him learn to be in ceremony, and give him a purpose in life. It is hiking 5-9 miles a day, mostly on roads but a few days of medium difficulty trail hiking. We are joining the walkers for at least a week, maybe longer. Does anyone have experience taking young dogs on long walks/hikes? Any suggestions on how to make it easy on him? Thanks!

Nice mix if I may say so.
I have two immediate thoughts.
If it is going to be hot, consider your options for shade and cool areas.
Take plenty of water him - and yourself!

We regularly walk our big collie six to ten miles a day but cut down to four shorter walks at a go when it is hot.

Here right now is thunder and lightning. He lays on my feet underneath my desk.

Good luck! I hope you and Chante have a great hike. I think as long as you are aware of how he is doing and take plenty of breaks, it should be okay as a one off. I've only taken my puppy on shorter walks, so unfortunately, cannot comment on a 5- 9 mile hike.
