DAP Products for a reactive dog?

Does anyone use DAP Products with a reactive dog ( i can only really find reviews online about being used with fireworks etc..)

does it help at all?

im considering maybe the spray with xeva (was looking at the collar but its not what i thought it would be and having to replace it every 4 weeks its going to work out expensive)

FWIW i think xeva is nervous excited.

when she hears a dog on tv or outside but cant see it she grumbles (and sometimes barks) and tries to cuddle in to me ( i just ignore her until she is calm)

when she see's a dog outside, she goes ballistic but if she is allowed to greet the other dog, she wants to play, then when they are leaving all the barking starts again.

i do not allow her to greet another dog until she is quiet and that means alot of walking away and back again untill she has settled down.

so what is your experience with the DAP Products and do you think it could help in this situation (im not expecting a miracle cure, just something to help calm her down a little so we can work more on the training around other dogs)

I've only used the DAP diffuser for a hyper dog with separation anxiety many years ago.

My verdict ..... useless. Had no effect whats so ever.

I'm afraid I'm seconding Nippys comment.

I used one for my Bernese a few years ago, he was very stressed out - it had no effect whatsoever.

Thats not to say it wont work with Xeva, but my personal opinion is it was a waste of money.

xx

I have recently just purchased a calming collar for my dog who is similar, grumbles and barks at scary noises and is reactive to people out of fear as well as being scared of traffic etc.. Only had mine on a week so can't comment on the effectiveness.

I know that moons mum on here has some success using one on her dog, and she recommended a brand which can be purchased on amazon which cost about £8 (much cheaper than the dap but the same pheromone releasing idea). Im on my phone so cant find the link and mm can maybe tell you a bit more.

IMO you have nothing to lose by giving it a go but these things always need to be combined with training/behavior modification.

thanks layla, i know i need to work on her reactivness ( i have been trying to work on it since it appeared when she went into training class, but she used to squeal before this to get down and walk she was 11 weeks old )

i wish i could let her meet more dogs off lead, its finding people who dont give us a wide berth because she isn't very polite in the way she approaches dogs either onlead or offlead

when offlead she runs at them hackles up barking (generally looking aggressive even though she isn't) until she gets there, then she sniffs and initiates play

the upside to this is that i know i can get her to leave the other dogs alone ( there was 5 little dogs all off lead on one side of the fence that spotted her on the other side and all started yapping at her, she flew over to the fence in the above manner but didn't stop the barking until i shouted LEAVE and she did, the owner just looked at me and admitted it was her dogs who started it)

any tips on dealing with her reactivness is greatfully recieved.

she has been in puppy class since 11 weeks of age she is now 10 months

was well socialised as a pup, went and still does go everywhere with me

i have tried bachs rescue remedy (which made no difference) this is why im wary of buying a DAP collar, i just want something that will help calm her down a little, so that i can help her with her reactivity and get her to finally see that by barking and going off her head, it means she isn't getting to greet the other dog

The book click to calm has been helpful to me, and am half way through reading James o hears dog aggression workbook both of which would probably really help you in finding ways to manage and improve her interactions with other dogs

Hi there.

Have used the DAP products on the family dog quite a while ago when she was suffering with anxiety (rescue dog, not long after we got her).

Sadly, despite having multiple plug ins (more than it recommended to ensure we had effectiveness) and a collar, I am afraid we saw no effect.

Things like this may vary from dog to dog...... in all honesty, I still have the spray. I bought it when I got Jinty and sprayed it in her crates.... I still do occasionally now. I have never had a problem with her but thought the pheramones my comfort her as she is still young and would remember them..... to some effect!

I wish you all the luck with your dog.

Over the past five months, we've tried the dap collar, Rescue Remedy, a music CD that is supposed to calm dogs, and a Thundershirt along with behavior modification. I can't see that they've helped my dog's reactivity and stress. My dog has an appointment for a full check up and to be evaluated for medication in a few days.

Wishing you good luck. I've read these products have helped other dogs.
