Pet dogs banned from Suffolk Show.

Just read this.....what a poor decision! Pet dogs will be banned due to fouling and hygiene issues......

Well I know I will get shot down in flames for saying this but I think it is a good idea

Personally I hate seeing dogs being dragged around County Shows, I honestly don't think having to wade through a sea of peoples legs is fun for a dog IMO

I understand it is not fun for every dog. I no longer take Fudge as she is scared of the bangs used in the gun dog demonstrations etc. However, prior to this ,she used to love it! She was not dragged round.....we sauntered around having a nosy, whilst she got lots of attention and some great socialisation.

I do think it sets a precedent though for other outdoor events to ban dogs under the same remit. It is perhaps indicative of society becoming less dog tolerant......

What a stupid ruling, all I can say is any dog is more than welcome at the shows I help organise.

It depends on the individual dogs..many love the stimulation of so many different sounds sights and smells. But yes it will be too much for some.

I took Stumpy to an agricultural show not long after we got her (crowds there no-one near what a major show would have). I admit she was quite scared at first and at certain points during the day. But at other points she really enjoyed herself.

The next time I took her to one she practically pulled me through the gates to go in (probably remembering the beefburgers)

It also depends on the weather. If its boiling hot with no shade, the dogs are probably better left at home.

But for the right dogs in the right conditions, I think it makes a really good day out. There are often events that the dogs can participate in - e.g. scurries, fun dogs shows etc.

ETA

I hope it dramatically affects the numbers going and they have a rethink next year)

I think its a wonderful thing. I love to do the dog shows at Agricultural Shows, but can honestly say I have never witnessed so much dog mess left on the ground at any other show (which are generally spotless as everyone cleans up after their dogs), it is truely disgusting. I have been known to, in the past, when spotting someone walking off leaving their dogs mess on the floor go up to them and offer them a bag to clean it up Usually leaves them suitably red faced.

Not to mention the continual loudspeaker announcements about dogs left in cars (very rare at "normal" dog shows these days) and also the amount of aggressive dogs brought around the show rings which is very off putting when you are trying to show a dog in the ring and theres barking/growling/fighting going on a couple of foot away.

ETA: Obviously not all pet owners are like that, i just realised it probably comes across as thats what im saying But, you either have to do a blanket ban or accept things as they are, so for me a ban is the best way forwards.

So does that mean then that you would be perfectly happy to not be allowed be walk your dog around any of the other areas ? . What about the agility dogs? The HTM dogs? The gundogs?

It is penalising all owners for the poor behaviour of the minority just like dog control orders do.....

I keep my dogs away from those areas at shows, yes. The barking at the agility rings winds my dogs up and I wouldnt want them to bark and cause a problem so, out of respect for the handlers I dont take my dogs near. Same with the obedience/HTM, if I want to watch it i go and watch it, but i wouldnt have my dog sat around the ring as an unnecessary distraction. Im sure they are so focussed they wouldnt notice, but better to be safe than sorry

I'm always disappointed when outdoor shows ban dogs. Most here have and that means I just don't go (and I know I can't be alone). I can understand their issues with it as people who don't clean up after their dogs are a nuisance. They make me SO ANGRY because they ruin it for the rest of us who DO clean up after our dogs.

Dahlia loves outdoor festivals. There are tons of people there who want to pet her, there are KIDS there and she loves kids, and sometimes a nice person will feed her a bit of hamburger or hot dog!

I think it's a good idea and wouldn't take my dogs even if I could - mind you, five is rather a handful so it wouldn't be much fun for anyone! The Three Counties Show held at Malvern doesn't allow dogs apart from competing dogs and that's how it should be - as long as people know not to bring them and then leave them to boil in the car!
