Not sure I understand what you mean by 4 paws on the ground not 2?

Walking is a 4 beat gait, trotting and pacing two beat and cantering 3 beat.

So how can you have 4 paws on the ground when either walking or running, on the spot or not?

Yes you can teach a dog to do a piaffe like a horse.

I think the OP means not standing on the back legs

I have only seen one dog piaffe really well and that was Atilla's Fly who is now dead and I don't think there is any video of her doing it.

He taught a high stepping trot and put it on cue, then he taught back next to him on cue, then he put the trot in going back and then stood still. He raised his legs as well which gave her extra help.

Tassle (my daughter) nearly has it with one of her collies .

It takes a lot of work and a lot of using muscles they don't normally use and I think they'd have to be pretty mature and co ordinated in their body to achieve it.

Fly was the dog that sprang to mind, I have seen a Goldie do it very well too, Joanna Hill's old Hazel.

I remember her---I should think it was taught in a similar way to Fly.

You really need the action first.

Rune ...that's what I meant. My initial thoughts were to teach a tap for each foot and then somehow stick em together

Yes the key is to move the centre of gravity backwards so the front end is very light.
