Dog harness and leaving a dog alone

Hello,
Just a couple of questions.

1. Got my 15 month old choc lab a ezy harness... Noticed after a couple of days 2 sores where it must be rubbing on her.. I am not using it now... Anyone else had similar issues?

2. How long is acceptable to leave a dog alone for.. Me and my wife both work, however our dog is generally only alone for 4 hours.. Occasionally longer...

3. We are planning a weeks holiday .. In the event of us not being able to sort someone to stay at ours to take care of our dog.. We are thinking kennels.. I was thinking of putting her in for maybe 1 day at first to build up the time rather than a full 7 days being her visit... Any tips advice regarding puttin a dog in kennels? I really don't want to put her in..but it may be th only option (she is a big softie and loves her home comforts)

I sympathise ... it's always a quandary when holiday time arrives as to what to do with the dog(s). If you plan to put her in kennels try and find one that has been recommended by a doggie friend and ask to visit them so that you can look around and ask all the questions you want to. A really good idea to put her in overnight so that its not totally alien to her when you are away (and she'll know you are coming back). Many kennels will let you take in her own bedding and I'd also take in an item of clothing that smells of you as a comforter and her own food. Check first that this is OK.
She may also have to have had a kennel cough vaccine so check on that too.

There are other ways of having a dog looked after while on holiday. Vets often have advertisements on their notice boards. A neighbour of ours takes their dog to a lady who looks after dogs at her home.

Regarding the harness - if its leaving sore don't use it, it must be the wrong shape or size for her to do that .

Good luck and enjoy your holiday.

I agree with what jenny.g says about recommendations and a trial run. When my dog had to be kenneled in an emergency neither she nor I had seen the place before but it was recomended by my Vet - and although she was a bit worried when being led up the path to their van, because I had given them her usual food [she was then on kibble] plus a bag with her favourite toys, she was brought home extremely relaxed.

Check also who the kennels use as their vet - it helps if they use the same vet you do.

Regarding the harness - is it the QuickFit one? I have had those for Pereg but found them sometimes difficult to adjust so they did not rub under her axilla, but then again she wears her harness all day as my door is open all the time and she is tethered so she can go out and come in at will. I still have the QuickFit harnesses but when she lost the weight she had gained from medication and needed smaller harnesses [she had been wearing the QuickFit Large] I changed to THESE as they are softer and more padded while being the same style.

I recently bought an ezy harness for my staffie. It fits ok but does rub a bit at her shoulders. She's very small but has a broad chest, so I'm looking for a better fitting harness at the moment. If your dog has sores from the harness I'd definitely look for a different one. The problem with ezy harnesses is that you can't really adjust all the straps too well and there are only a small variety of sizes available. So if you have a dog inbetween those sizes it's awkward to fit it.

The most I leave Ella alone is 6 hours, and that's only very rarely. The ideal period to leave a dog alone is between 3 and 5 hours. The dog will get enough rest without being alone too long in that period.

I like the Game dogs harnesses, they are fleece lined and for dogs that are a different shape like Staffies you can buy the parts separately so the harness fits. I have never had one of these rub.

Agree with the others regarding Kennels and trial run sounds great I chose my Kennels well, lady there has actually become a great friend and nothing is a problem.I know she is safe and well taken care of, heart breaking at first leaving her in but we all deserve a holiday!! Most kennels will let you leave in their own bed, blankets, toys, anything really that will make your dog feel more comfortable.Honestly mine is seriously pampered at home and she does just fine

Thank you all so much for taking the time to offer me some great advice.. This the second dog we have had (the first one was a difficult dog)... This one is a fun loving full of life chocolate lab and I do worry sometimes at the times we leave her.. I walk her every morning for an hour at 6am then at 5.30pm... In between those times she has the day split up with my son and daughter being around for some of the time and maybe a little 15 minute walk.. I just wanted to make sure I am doing the best I can for her and giving her a happy life.. Thanks again

Pippa goes to daycare once or twice a week, and her daycare lady also does holiday boarding. Pippa loves her, and loves being at her house with the other little dogs. I feel absolutely happy letting Pippa board there, as she knows the place and the lady and is completely relaxed. I'm sure she hardly knows I'm gone! Maybe try and find someone similar? They might also visit/walk your dog during the day sometimes if you're out working, and that'd be a good way to get him used to them anyway. I would be beside myself if Pips had to go in kennels.
