Has anyone fed a homemade diet for kidney disease?

Hi, my nearly 9 y o lab x ess has just been diagnosed with kidney disease does anyone have any experience in feeding a home made diet for renal failure? The UR diet they are suggesting is over £60 per 14 kg bag and my finances won't stretch to this for very long!

I suggested this to my vet however he said it was a definite no/no, I would never get the diet correct and it would only make Katie's condition worse. Did your vet tell you what stage your dog is in? Katie is in stage 3 of which there are 4 stages

I know the diet is pricey, Katie won't eat dry kibble and has to have the canned variety and it works out really expensive.

There is a group on yahoo groups who support owners and their dogs with renal failure. You might find support there as some self feed

I'll know more after her blood tests, her urine shows protein, crystals, albumin and other things I can't remember now. It was a lot to take in as only went in for an ear infection and post urine infection check up! Don't suppose my insurance will cover veterinary diets! Thanks for advice, do you know name of yahoo group to help my research?

You should check with your insurance as some do. We changed insurers (long story) & hence pre existing conditions were not covered. Its certainly worth a phone call.

I cant recall their name offhand, we cant give links on dogsey to other forums. Name is - K9 Kidney Diet.
