WANTED Malamute/Akita/Husky

Hello...

does anyone know of any malamutes akitas or huskys for sale or needing a new home...as me and my family really want one!!

Have you researched all these breeds..the first and last and definately not for the feint hearted

Bit worried 3 Beloved that you are not going about finding your family a pet in the best way, just to ask around could find you with a pup from a puppy farm.

On the other hand if this is your first dog then a responsible breeder may not sell you one of the breeds mentioned because they are just not suitable to someone who has not owned a dog before.

We do not know your domestic circumstances so it is difficult to make suggestions as to which breeds may suit but in general for a first dog it is best to avoid dogs from the Working or Hound groups and also some from other groups so tell us something about your home circumstances and we will do our best to advise. On the other hand you could visit some local rescue centres but be careful you do not get a dog that has problems you would be unable to deal with, the better rescue organisations will watch for this but some are not so fussy only being interested in finding a dog a home and emptying a kennel for another needy dog.

Lists of puppies available can be found on the Kennel Club Web site that is also the place to go for the contact numbers of the various club secretaries who will know who has pups available and will help you find a puppy.

If you are truly interested in one of these dogs I would suggest that you investigate exactly what impact this kind of dog would have on your lifestyle. I do visits locally (south shropshire) with my own dogs and some of our rescues to home check potential owners and it also gives you the opportunity to see how you would cope with a dog of this size and energy level actually in your home!
I am prepared to go outside our catchment area if expenses are covered.
These visits last a couple of hours and need to be at a time when ALL family members and other pets are at home. If this visit is successful, I will then help you to find your ideal dog either from our lists or those of other rescues.
Please be prepared to be put through the Spanish Inquisition and to provide details of your chosen vet (which will need to be verified) and cover expenses and rehoming donations.
advise is always given as to whether you/your lifestyle are suited to certain breeds and honesty is our policy!

Definitely not! Need a lot of serious training and guidance. Unfortunately i saw first hand what happens when someone ... some idiot .... gets one of these! Had one attack one of my old dogs, had the poor thing pinned on the ground! You can tell how i didn't think things through as i ran straight up and challenged the dog to get it off my dog whilst the owner stood and laughed! Later i found out this dog had killed a dog before, attacked a few people, had been taken off the owner but the stupid police actually gave it back to the owner!
Thankfully my pup at the time wasn't hurt but she was scared to go on that field for a while.

Akita's can be very stubborn and fi they choose to do something they shouldn't, woe betide anyone who gets in their way.

Having said that, if treated with respect adn trained proeprly from day one, they can make one of the mos tloyal dogs anyone could wish to have. They are great protectors for families with children but their size can be a problem for some people.

I wouldn't recoomend an Akita if someone hasn't owned a dog before but if a large, protective, stubborn, arrogant, aloof furry bulldozer is what someone is lookuing for, then an Akita would suit very well.

They are a LOT of hard work - moreso than GSDs and don't fare well when left alone for long periods. But overall, make excellent pets if treated properly.

All I can say is that the Akita will need so much input, be careful if your thinking of getting one.

I love the breed, but we have a guy in this road with two, and I will say he has to put in twice the amount of work with them than I do with 3 Border Collies.

They are beautiful, well socialised and protective dogs, he manages them and makes it look a breeze, but believe me he has been handling Akita's for years and spends hours on hours training them. I'd definately say not for a first time handler, you really need to know all there is to know about them and you need to be around them alot before getting one.
