Someone had given you,if it was of no use to you,didn't fit etc ?

I think would depend on if there was any sentimental attachment for anyone,ie antique or something, also the person who had given whatever it was. I have jewelery here that although never wear could never sell because of the above reasons, but other things that have given to someone else who can use or have sold. No one has been offended(to date)if have got something else that is more suitable or useful and would much rather have something that can use. Hope is bit of help in whatever you are thinking of

Yes if it wasn't a sentimental thing.
If it were clothing or something like that why not, afterall they wanted to buy you something and if it doesn't fit its not going to do you much good
