Dewclaws on hind legs

Are some breeds prone to them and is there any advantages/disadvantages to having them?

My pals dog is the first I have ever seen with one on every leg! She didn't even realise he wasn't meant too!

Having dewclaws is not something that dogs are "prone to".

They exist for a purpose.

Some breeds have dewclaws only on the front legs, some have them removed, some do not.

They can be very useful for holding onto to bones etc, and can be used for traction.

In some dogs they are loose and floppy in others they are firmly attached.

Some breeds have, in their breed standard, explicit reference to dew claws.on their hind legs. They are MEANT to have them.

Fewer and fewer vets will remove dew claws as a matter of course now, since the docking ban and so more dogs appear with them than before.

My dog has a little black bald section on his rear legs where the dew claws would be.. does this mean they were removed or is this just how it looks when they are born with none?

Sounds like they have been removed. One of my dogs was born without - one I don't know, but neither have any marks in that area.

My BC x who came to me nearly four weeks ago has dew claws on his back legs. First dog I have had with these. I never realised that some dogs have them on their hind legs.

They are cool feet! Give him a few hundred years, they will be thumbs!

I don't think mine have them on their back feet. Jake definitely uses his front ones when he has a bone.

If Rio had thumbs she would take over the world. Far scarier than cats with thumbs!
