Demodectic mange isn't contagious - my other dog hasn't got it, and thats what my vet told me when I went to pick up the wash.
Well, it's only contagious in the first 3 days of life.

Lel - Thanks for the link, will have a read of it!
No, I didn't plan on breeding her! I heard that D. mange can be hereditory! yikes!

Yep, it was diagnosed from the results of a skin scrape.
I'm still waiting for the results of a hair pull, and they are also going to grow cultures on the skin scrape, so I'll get more results in about 2 weeks - just to make sure there is nothing else.

I'll let you know how the washing goes!

Sorry to hear about your dogs problems, Demodectic mange mite is easy to see under a normal microscope on a slide made from a skin scrape so if the vet has found the mite in the scrape in larger than normal numbers the I would say that is the correct diagnoses. But the rings do look un-typical of the disease so the vet is right to continue to look for some other or additional problem. Hope you have a clear picture of the totality of your dogs problems soon and that he will be on the road to recovery.

Although Demodectic mange is caused by the Demodex canis mite it is the dogs own immune system that allows the mite to develop in large numbers that cause the hair loss. So it is the reason for the lowered immune system that needs to be addressed as well as the mite and any secondary infection. Lowered immunity can happen following an operation or following a stressful event but if there is no obvious reason for immunity problem then perhaps once the demodectic mange is cleared you could talk to the vet about boosting the dogs immune system to avoid reoccurrence of the demodectic problem.

Thankyou for the info Thordell

Next time I go to the vets with Teagan, i'll mention about the lowered immunity, and see what the vet has to say!

Do know that those who are into natural feeding/remedies would be able to suggest products that can help increase/improve the immunity, but I am not into this and am unable to help with suggestions.

I was talking to a guy today at college, and he said to put her on a raw diet.

I'm worried that this is quite expensive though, as I really don't have a lot of money.
The food I feed at the moment (Gusto) only costs about £3 for a 7kg bag, so its really cheap!
