UNPREDICTABLE TERRIER

ok so heres the deal, scrumpy went to puppy classes, very quick learner, went offlead from the day he could, was brilliant, then as he got older just out of the blue started bolting for no reason atall.
most of the time he will be great rarely leaving my side (off lead) this is with course a pocket full of treats!
But then sometimes he just goes off on one and bolts, sometimes for just 10 mins other times longer.
most time's he comes back to me after he bolts, but one time.....

he ran off, and ran across a 60mph road i tell you i nearly died, he actually ran home, and waiting for me

He is just so unpredictable, i dont know why he bolts.
dont suppose anyone could help?
has any idea on why he does it?
