Staffie limping when walking (but ok when running) any ideas?

Hi All,

I have a 2yr old male staffie who has been limping over the last 3 weeks, on his front right leg. He only limps when walking, fine when running. I have taken him to 2 vets, and both x-rays came back normal - they couldnt find anything wrong with him. Its killing me as you know how staffies live for walking/running in parks and beaches - yet I'm being forced to put an end to this untill I see some improvement. Has anyone been through a similar thing, and any suggestions as to what I can do?

thanks

Mike

Hello and welcome to Dogweb

Sorry to hear of your dog's problem I guess that there s nothing much you can do other than what I am sure the vets have told you - rest and restricted exercise until the condition improves. I know it must be difficult but it is for the best in the long-term. If you over-exercise now it is going do more damage and take longer for recovery.

It may be worth trying acupuncture or consulting a canine chiropracter - but please do ask your vet first if any such alternative treaments would be appropriate. Swimming is a good, low impact exercise but, again, consult your vet first

If you are very worried it may be worth asking your vet for a referral to a specialist.

Hope he recovers soon and do keep us posted

Thanks for your response ShadowBoxer, guess all I can do right now is restrict him to leashe walks which is better than nothing - although trying to convince him of that is hard.

Hi Mikey I think dogs use different sets of muscles for running and walking as do humans so it could be a muscular problem, this is why your dog can run but not walk. Rest and no jumping up should help, if not I would go back to the vet for more tests.

If he's still limping in 6 weeks i would take him back to the vets dogs with arthritis will limp when walking but run fine when 'warmed' up joint problems can be common in some types of Staffords a lot of weight on little legs puts stress on the joints as dose the leary reckless runs with all those crazy twists n turns they do at your dogs age. hopefully im wrong and hes just tweaked a muscle heres a few tips i use in my day to day dog maintenence
After a good walk/run give him a good rough rub down with a towel massageing with your finger tips
Watch his weight a lot of Staffords imo could do with losing a bit of weight less weight less stress on the joints
Don't go full on with his walk/run every day a bit of light exercise for every two days of hard training
Add oily fish to his diet, mackerel&piltchards are good (piltchards have gram for gram as much protien as steak) as well as being good for the joints they have loads of other health benifits.
Wotever the problem the above advice will do him no harm i have a Stafford who sufferd from arthritis his symptoms where similar to wot you have described i sucessfully treated it with a glucosamine based product called Cosequin DS hope it all goes well
