What breed / cross breed would you reccomend

My friend is looking to get a dog and is quite happy to rescue one (she's in Scotland) her family have always had dogs and she grew up with 2 rescue setters, and her mum currently has a collie x retriever rescue.

She has a 7yr old son and 2 cats and works p/t. We spoke for ages today and she doesnt want a staffy x ( ) no I don't mean Ben I just mean in general as she thinks they are too powerful. She would like something that is roughly beagle sized. It would have to be gentle in nature (or at least as far as is possible to tell re breed type) and be a loveable type eg like human contact (again as far as possible re breed type ideals) and be quite calm and canny in nature.

She doesnt HAVE to rescue but that is what she would liketo do. Anyone any suggestions
