Sounds like re-homing is your best option. I think if you kept your lovely dog, you might just be too stressed and that is not good for you, the kids, or the dog.

I got my Chi boy when he was five months old. His Owner was literally sobbing as I took him from her (she was moving into rented accommodation and her new Landlord wouldn't let her keep a dog). I felt awful and thought it would take him ages to settle in with us, as he was very spoilt and obviously very loved but I can honestly say, he never looked back. He settled in straight away, we kept his previous name, so as not to confuse him and he was fine from the first moment we got him home. I am sure your dog will settle too, in a nice new home. It will probably be you who suffers more, missing him. Dogs tend to adjust very quickly when they are young, from what I have experienced.
