Can dogs catch human viruses?

Fudge is very subdued at the moment, she has not been herself today at all. She did manage to raid fishheads and complete skeletons out of the bin last night. She did however have a runny bum earlier so i don`t think there is a blockage. She is not being sick just very quiet and sleepy.

We have one ill child (not stomach related) at the moment and we have all had similar bugs over the last week.

My question is, can dogs catch human viruses or is it more likely to be connected with the bin raid and a dodgy rear end?

Obviously I will keep a close eye on her and if she gets worse will seek veterinary advice.

Hello Fudgeley - I really don't know but here is a link I looked up, not sure if it is helpful, or not. http://www.asktonyanything.com/tonyd...dog_catch.html and another http://www.terrificpets.com/forum/32004.asp

I think it is just what it ate - any bones in his throat? I remember my cat, Sooty, when given fish would sometimes get bones stuck in her throat - I would fish them out (excuse the pun) her throat.

I do hope Fudge is lots better by now.

Big hugs from me and doggy kisses from Loki xxxx

Thanks BK, very informative. It seems they can`t catch colds etc and viruses are species specific. It was probably the fish/bin raid. I gave her plain cold pasta afterwards to try and cushion any bones and had a good look down and couldn`t see anything stuck. I`m hoping that by morning she will have perked up. She is wagging her tail a little more so that is a good sign. Maybe just stomach ache and a poorly tum.

Morning all. i was greeted this morning by a bouncing, licking wall of Fudge. Several tennis balls and footballs later I came to the conclusion that she must feel better. Now I need to train OH not to hang fish bits in a carrier on the kitchen cupboard door handle!
