The O.B.J. (Orkney Bodge Job)

Or perhaps "The Twilight Zone Bodge Job" )TZBJ?

These are part of what makes the Twilight Zone the Twilight Zone; some things done in a way that suggests that nobody ever thought that they'd need to be re-done or repaired one day.........

The septic tank with no overflow pipe - just a soakaway, which was OK until the winter thaw soaked all the surrounding land anyway.

Wiring a two-way switch using the earth wire as a return. Hey, it saves you the effort of finding 4-core cable!

Fix the porch windows in place by driving nails under the panes - saves framing till the nails rust through!

Putting the hot water tank immersion heater on the same fuse circuit as the cooker. That way, if it blows, you get neither hot meals nor hot water. Why get spoiled?

You may well find some of these little quirks in other parts of the country, but, here in the TZ, we put them all in one house!

Think we had the same builder

Hanging a small microwave shelf with over 50 nails of varying descriptions

Deciding that double glazing is overrated, so nailing an extra panel of glass to the window, about 3 inches from the main panel of glass. Whoops, you can't open any windows, never mind...

Wiring in 90% of plug sockets upside down

Creating such a complex and muddled electrical system that a qualified electrician can't fix it, and so that when a bulb blows in the kitchen, every light in the downstairs goes off too.

Putting 2 central heating pumps in, both the wrong way round...

Having a hand made kitchen which can't be replaced with a fitted one as all the units are different shapes, sizes, and widths. Meaning new owners can't replace the doors, but have to rip the old thing out and replace everything...

Using too many nails, and glue and screws in every single job, meaning that removing or replacing becomes a very dangerous task
