In my local newspaper today, 2 dogs had to be destroyed after savaging a 6yr old boys face and arm. 1 was a doberman, the other a mastiff.

That is just awful, there seems to be something in the news at least once a week these days. Poor, poor woman.

How awful.

There seems to be increasing publicity at the moment, I heard this morning that there are calls for owners to be licensed.

What an afull thing to happen I have no doubts that there will be more and more reports on dog attacks untill a resolution is reached.

I beleive that lisencing would be a brill idea but only if policed correctly. Vets should be involved in the lisencing too

Sadly i feel the world is on a downward spiral when it comes to dogs. There seems to be a "dog" culture, where dogs are animals when they do some thing wrong yet are humanised at every other availible point.

People are forgetting that DOGS ARE DOGS and not part of the fixtures and fittings of a "traditional family unit". IMO some people buy dogs for the wrong reasons, without thinking through cost and most importantly TIME. It would seem that todays world thinks that a book or single course of training classes will give them a well behaved dog for life...as im sure you know it wont. I also feel that it is too easy to aquire dogs and irresponsible breeders are rife!

licensing and vetting will go along way to help this problem but i think awareness and education is also an important factor, but i stood think hard to enforce.

I am sure this is not the first time you have read an opinion like this and I'm sure its not the last. It is a shame individuals are calling for "breed bans" and "bans on certain breeds being kept as pets". With responsible breeding and ownership we can decrease these problems vastly. I can show you plently of dobes, gsds and rotties that would lick you to pieces!!!!

I am by know means an expert, I am learning every day. Many of you will know My dog isnt perfect by any means but it worries me that people allow their children to come running up to him without knowing anything about his temperament. Likely he is brilliant with children but I'm not naive, after all he is a dog and on a "bad day" could do anything no matter how well "trained" he is.

This is just my opinion and is in no way related to anyone directly...After all your all very wise people who i admire and respect hugely!!!!

I totally agree with your comments, dalmonda.

Bad breeding from aggressive dogs, lack of commitment to training and socialising and most importantly, a lack of responsibility for aggressive dogs is what makes these dogs a problem.

Dalmonda's dog is friendly but is kept on a lead as he is so big and boisterous and yet so many with actually aggressive dogs don't feel the need to control them.

The fact that these dogs were known to the police makes it even worse as it obviously wasn't a one-off attack...

This is horrific... an unbelievable way to die.

This dog attack was brutal and I cannot believe that such dangerous animals were kept in a civilian property...

My thoughts go out to the family of the lady who was killed by these beasts.
