Harvey - 7 year old Basset Hound in Aberystwyth

Harvey is a 7 year old tri-coloured Basset Hound and is currently on foster in Aberystwyth in Wales.

The Harvey Fact File

Dog status: Good
Cat status: Not to be rehomed with cats
Child status: Would prefer a home without children.
House training: Perfect
Home alone: Not able to be left for long periods. No full time workers
Basic training: Basic training only and needs more input.

Basset Hounds are big dogs on short legs! With their exaggerated length of ears, wrinkly skins and droopy eyelids these dogs are easily recognised. They are heavy, long and low dogs with great strength and are not for the faint hearted. Bassets are known to be a vocal breed. They might howl or bark when they want something, or to suggest that they think something is wrong. They also use a low, murmuring whine to get attention, which sounds to many owners as though their Bassets are "talking" to them. This whine is also used by the hound to beg (for food or treats) and varies in volume depending on the nature of the individual hound and length of time it has been begging. They are scent hounds and can be hard to move when they have found something to smell and can follow a scent for miles becoming deaf to their owners. Even though Bassets sleep a lot, walks are still necessary.

Harvey is a typical Basset hound as described above; he is very vocal and doesn’t like to be left at all and is very strong.
Harvey was a home surrender who was surrendered with another female Basset who is also available for rehoming. Molly and Harvey can be rehomed together or without. He is good with other dogs and is in foster with a Westie and plays nicely with her. He can be a little wary outside when dogs approaches but quickly settles and is happy to interact.

Harvey is in foster with cats but cannot be rehomed with cats or small animals.

Harvey is good with people he knows but can be nervous of people he doesn’t. He has snapped a few times in foster and while not made contact we would prefer a child free home for Harvey. He would need someone in for most of the day.

Harvey has some basic training and knows sit, stay and leave it and is learning to walk nicely on alead. Harvey is a big dog (with short legs) and is very strong. He will pull if he wants to get somewhere or there is a smell that needs investigating and he can be difficult to move. Harvey is active and playful outside but has shown a tendancy to try and chase bikes and has snapped when people he doesn’t know have approached. He gets stressed when left and will bark and needs to have his crate covered and night so he doesn’t bark at noises outside.

Harvey has shown no possessive or aggressive behaviour and is happy to be touched all over however we are looking for an experienced owner who can continue the training he is getting and to manage his behaviour around strangers. He travels fine in a car and will settle after an initial settling in period and is fully housetrained.

When Harvey arrived with Hope Rescue he was over 7 stone and a heart murmur was detected at the vets. He is being fed the right amount of food for his ideal weight and minimal extras and getting lots of exercise and the weight has started to come off. His new owners will need to continue this controlled weight loss. He shows no symptoms of a heart murmur and is very active when out and has no coughing or fluid retention and is in no need of medication.

In summary, Harvey would be happy as an only dog if he had a lot of attention from his owner but she could quite happily live with other dogs or be rehomed with Molly. He is an active dog who is learning to enjoy longer walks but will need further training and a quiet household with an experienced Basset or hound home.

All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and microchipped prior to rehoming. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family. Hope Rescue rehomes throughout the UK.
