Which joint supplement is best??

I've done some searches but am still confused as to what's best so am hoping for some advice.

Whisper is 7 years old and when she first came she showed some slight stiffness when getting up and down. I bought canine cod liver oil (basic ones from Pets At Home) and she gets one a day. But I read on here that it isn't the best supplement for various reasons and so have been reading up but there is such a range am a bit bamboozled as to what's best!

I usually shop on Vetuk and think I've narrowed down the best options for Whisper as being:

Dorwest Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablets

Yumove joint care for dogs

Glycoflex I for dogs

- simply because these seem to be so frequently mentioned - but any other options gratefully received!

Am thinking some Salmon Oil added to her food would also be generally beneficial for her so plan to get some of that plus some of the Fish4dogs treats so next month when I order some more food for her I plan to add these to the order.

Ive always used glucosomine and chondontrin but get it from Asda and crush them there a third of the price of Dorwest.

My vet recommends green lipped mussel - and actually favours it over Glu and Chond which is usually the most commonly used.

I give my dogs ArthriAid Omega. Salmon oil is better for dogs than cod liver oil.

If you want to increase the amount of glucosamine naturally, raw chicken feet and chicken broth are both high in it.

Not all supplements are the same

So you can get plenty of cheap ones, but if you compare the actual content, you may find that you get what you pay for.

I prefer to give supplements "bespoke".

All of mine bar one come from Healthspan which are extremely high quality.

Glucosamine _ HCl rather than KCl is purer
Chondroitin - should be marine rather than bovine
Rosehip
Fish Body Oil - check the DHA/EPA content
Vitamin E - natural rather than synthetic
Green Lipped Mussel
MSM

I also give Cetyl-M which is Cetyl Myristoleate with garlic, ginger and bromelain.

Thanks all!

Yes I had heard that supermarket ones can be poorer quality - we use an online supplier for our own supplements to get higher quality ones for a better price.

I wasn't sure if there was a difference between human supplements and canine supplements so didn't know what was safe.

Smokeybear - how do you work out dosage - just one a day?

Regarding raw chicken - we are still working on what Whisper will and won't eat so shall store that away for future reference.

I give one a day for my dogs as nothing that I give them is going to result in an OD, just realised I omitted to put Vitamin C!

I give Vitamin C to bowel tolerance, they get 1000mg per day.

Milo has been on Synoquin since he injured a toe about six years ago as my vet was sure it would develop arthritis. It's never bothered him since and even though he no longer has that particular leg, he is still on the Synoquin to support his remaining joints.

We are using pernamax at the moment

Noticed that of an evening after his usual tearing about during exercise the boy would come down the path after his pre bed wee looking a bit stiff in front (a bit like me after our 10k at the weekend!) so bought him a months supply (it has a 2 week loading dose included) and he skips back down the path now

it is green lipped muscle based (cold extracted)

i bought my other half the human version for his gammy knee as well
