I don't think it has anything to do with the 'd' word which is often used to explain just about every kind of behaviour.

If you watch the dog closely and note when a particular behaviour occurs you can often see the reason for it.

Dogs will sometimes use a foot to instigate play (mine does it with her toys too ), so you could say they are trying to get your attention.

My dog does it if she wants my feet to move sometimes it because she wants to go out/or it is her meal time/ or wants me to get up from the chair and play .
At the same time as placing a foot on mine she will look intently at my feet then up at my face.
Many of my previous Schnauzers did the same thing.

My Boxers come and sit on my feet, or tread on them....

I have always thought that it was an instinctual thing to be in contact with me...

I doubt a 7 month old Westie is trying to assert any sort of dominance

Your feet are nice and warm perhaps that is another reason why dogs like feet.

Dougal is always catching my feet when he play fights with my OH, I can have them on the couch and he will fly past me, ALWAYS catching my feet painfully with his claws. If I am just sitting with my feet on the floor he will come over and lie on them.

I figure in the first instance it's just accidental, but the second, he just likes to have contact with me. He's there at the moment. Makes a lovely footwarmer

I think some dogs are just touchy-feely - my dogs curl up with heads on the other dogs and snooze. Maybe they just feel safer that way?

Ollie will either sit or lay with his head on my feet when I have got back home from being out I think it is to make sure I do not leave the house again.
