Injections

Hey folks, just a quick question if I may?

I pick my pup up on sunday. He'll be just under 8 weeks old. He had his first injection at around six weeks of age. The idea being the earlier we got them started, the earlier he could be out for socialisation and training etc.

I always thought that the second injection mostly came a week or two after the first. Then it was a week or two again before pup was 'safe' to go out.

My vet came into the shop where I work and I told her that my pup had already had his first, so I'd get her to give him his second when I got him, which is over a week since his first injection.
Now, whether she missunderstood or something but she said that he couldnt have his second jab until he was 10-12 weeks old, irrespective of when he had his first.

So can anyone shed some light on this please?

Obviously I'll be carrying him out with me anyway, but I'd like to get him out 'properly' as soon as.

Thankies

It used to be that could work. If your pup was vaccinated at 6 weeks the next jab would ensure they got out and about earlier. It has been found though that 6 weeks is too early for the first jab, the vaccine reacts with mum's immunity so the pup ends up not fully covered.
You could well find that your pup willl need to start the vaccination regime again, that has happened to a couple of people I know, if the 2 week window for the second jab isn't stuck to, the vet will often start the vaccinations over....I had that happen to one of my guide dog pups.

As I say it used to be the fact that having them jabbed at 6 weeks ensured they could go down on the ground at a younger age, but now it is thought not to be worth the risk as the pup isn't actually fully 'covered' by the vaccination if it is done at such an early age. Hope that helps.

Remember you can carry your pup with you to socialise it and that can be more beneficial as it meetts the world from the safety of your arms. Don't go to heavily dog populated areas though.
