Acute osteoarthritis - spine

we have today taken our 8yr old rescused basset to the vets, where his has been diagnosed with acute/chronic osteoarthritis on 3pts of his spine, his back right knee & mild form starting on his back left knee.
we have yet to collect him, to establish what treatment the vet suggests. we have been aware this could be an issue, as a rescue, we had no history & he has had issues with his back legs in the past. he has been on an all-natural diet for over 5yrs now, keeping his weight to the safest low level, to try to minimise the impact on his joins (he weight 25.5kgs). he also has glucosamine sulphate daily.
can anyone give me any advice as to what is best, both dietry & any other option, such as maybe hydrotherapy. addititionally, any advice of treatment for his osteoarthitis would be greatly recd. he is such a beautiful natured boy & we are anxious that whatever time he has left with us, is the absolute best.

5days on, and an update...
Barney was prescribed predno leucotropin, a steroid/cortisone mix of tablet. He started his course on monday on collection from the vets, tuesday morning he was up & about, albeit it very stiff. Continued to improve thru Tuesday. On Weds morning, we noticed he had developed diahorrea, of a thick 'chocolate custard' consitency. on calling out vet, we were advised that the tablets were not agreeing with him & they prescribed 'tagamet' & to stop the predno-leucotropin. Back to the vets on Thurs, where we saw his x-rays (large spondylosis on the lumbar joint right by his hips, which was heart-wrenching). Lady vet prescribed 'Previcox' as alternative treatment, but not to start for a clear 48hrs after ceasing the predno-leucotropin, due to the steroid element contained. Barney started the Previcox yesterday morning (continuing with the Tagamet) & all appears to be progressing nicely. Stools back to normal, healthy appetite & movement pretty much back to normal.

Will upate this thread for information, for anyone with similar circumstances.

Well, nearly a year on & Barney is still with us. His spondylosis & osteoarthritis will never be cured, only managed. So far he is doing fabulously, with meds hopefully a distant necessity, tho a certainity rather than a possibility.
Not sure how to attach pics, so any guidance gratefully recd
