Should There Be A Minimum Age For The Use Of A Stud Dog?

This is something that has bugged me for sometime, I see a lot of people in ESS using a stud dog by the time they're 9 months old. Am I the only person to think this is wrong? The dog may be health tested, but what about temperament? So much can change once the dog reaches maturity, surely it's better to wait and see how the dog is going to mature before rushing in to use it at stud?

Personally I think not using a stud dog until he's 2 years old is acceptable. What does everyone else think?

When I was showing the average age for a Stud dog was 18 months and over depending on breed, could be older. Im amazed someone is using a 9 month old puppy.

Indeed, I don't know why there isn't tbh?

It's not unusual in Springers sadly (don't know about any other breeds?), it just seems people are in such a rush and with the breed not realistically maturing til 18 months old I can't see it being good for them tbh.

I hope not in the larger breeds. You can't even get a reliable hip X-Ray at 9 months.

The majority of ESS breeders don't hipscore their stock......

Another reason I doubt I'll ever buy an English bred Show Springer.

I think it is fine after they have been fully health tested (when applicable). So, that is over 1 year of age in most cases. Obviously that doesn't apply to a 9 month old dog.

Im inclined to agree.

Foolhardy & obviously dont care a toss for their breed/dogs. If this is the state of play in the show world today, im probably best out of it. Its sooooooo sad.
