Home needed for Shih Tzu

Cody is a four year old Shih Tzu belonging to my Mother. Cody needs a home where he would be the only dog. My Mum has Cody and his brother. Cody has shown aggression to both my Mum and his sibling. She took him to the vets for checks and the vet recommends he is rehomed as he has no respect for her. He responds and behaves for men and was fine when my Father was alive, he is a lively loveable boy, who just loves fetching his ball. He has been castrated, and is up to date with his inoculations. Obviously my Mother wants the right home for him, where he will be happy. If we can find the right person I am able to drive him to your house if its not too far from Brighton.

Cody

If you think you can help Cody, please feel free to ask any questions in this thread.

Sorry I can't help but...is the vet a behaviourist too? My first port of call would always be the APDT or APBC and get the dog behaviourally assessed. Don't think it's very sponsible to try to rehome a dog who has been human and dog aggressive without getting him properly assessed first. They may even find that there are simple things they can do which means he won't need to be rehomed.

Hi catrinsparkles,
Our vet is a dog behavioural specialist and is APDT accredited and has had Cody in for proper assessment. He has recommended rehoming as my Mother has no control over him. His aggression is domination based. We are certainly not being irresponsible, any person interested in giving Cody a good home, will be made aware of all the facts. This decision has not been taken lightly, but he needs somebody that teach him his place in life. As I said, with a man in his life, he will be a good dog again.

Ok...just checking as I've known lots of vets give out behavioural advice with nothing but their pet experience and personal opinion to back it up.

I understand what you are saying, and you are right, but this fellow is very very good with both dogs and people. He is convinced that in the right home, Cody will make a great pet for somebody.

Good luck in finding the perfect home.

Do you mean that the vet is a member of the APBC rather than APDT because there are no male members of the latter in the East Sussex area and it's doubtful that any of their members would suggest dominance problems as the cause?

Thanks Brierley, you are probably right about the accreditation, I know he is qualified to train as well as fix dogs. He has given us a few numbers for Shih Tzu rescue, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to put him on here too.

I hope poor Cody does find a home and that someone 'not too far from Brighton' would want him if you aren't prepared to take him any further?

If I had to rehome my dog under what circumstances I cannot imagine - I'd be prepare to deliver her to the other side of the world if it meant she would go to a good home.

I am a bit puzzled by that tho - as if someone thought they could rehome him surely they'd COME TO SEE HIM and there'd be no need for you to drive him to them? Or are you prepared to take him to someone who hasn't been to see him - if so they won't be seeing him in his 'home environment' will they?
