What about the staffie PAT dogs etc?? I just wonder where you draw the line at responsible breed ownership?

I do own a dog aggressive staffie so know what he is capable of - however I know many lovely staffies who are wonderful with other dogs, MIssy on here being one of them, who is my dogs stooge dog and he gets on great with her.

I just wonder where one should draw the line in recognising your dogs history???

I think alot of the breeding in staffies isnt great and dogs who are dog aggressive are bred when I believe they shouldnt be etc, and the BYB and puppy farms that churn them out dont help. But really are you guys saying that you shouldnt own a staffie and let it offlead or socialise with other dogs JUST IN CASE???

just curious?
Imho. No,i think people tend to humanise the needs of dogs.
Why do they need to have doggie friends?
Isnt a sbt content to be with its owner and enjoy each others company,i know i didnt get my two for that reason,i got them for me,not to to go meeting and greeting other dogs. They are calm and well behaved if they see another dog, that doesnt mean im going to let them all run around together,i will just not risk it.
Ive known many a sbt that has never had any issues with other dogs, but also know many that go crazy at the sight of another dog, the first been fantastic and great for the breed, but still im only speaking for myself and hope ive explained my reasons.

Just a quick update on the Staffy that bit Poppy.

She has attacked and bitten another dog. The owner was telling me this this morning. I feel a little bit sorry for her, she is quite naive in lots of ways. Her boyfriend got the dog for her.

She only told me today that it is a rescue and they know nothing about it's history. She has 2 children too and one is quite severly disabled.

I have been thinking about her all day. I am worried about the kids although the dog has never shown any aggression towards people.

I want to discuss this with her but don't really know how to approach it. Her boyfriend, who is older, I think was being totally irresponsible he's not there all the time so she is left to handle the dog.
What should I suggest to her and how should I go about it. Or should I keep my gob shut and say nowt? I did mention about Poppy's training and suggested she take her there but don't know if she will or not.

MMNnn I think it sounds like this dog hasnt been socialised and that she cant handle it, did she say how much walking it gets etc?? I would suggest training but if its dog aggressive I would seriously doubt many classes will take it on-or that was my experience when looking for a class to put bruno in, as soon as you mention staffie and dog aggressive people practically hung up on me !!

Why is it offlead if its dog aggressive to get the chance to attack another dog - is it because she cant handle it onlead?? Have you met the dog Elaine- whats it like? Has the woman spoken to her local staffie rescue or the rescue to see if they have a behavioruist/trainer that could help them out??

I wouldnt be overly concerned about the kids as I truly believe there is no correlation between dog and human aggression - Bruno is proof enough of that, however if she cant cope with it now its not going to get better and if one of the kids is disabled she probably has very little time to put in with the dog and HE obviously isnt very responsible if he lets it offlead to attack other dogs....

Thanks Dani,
I think she does, or did, walk the dog, but not on a regular basis. She said that when it attacked the other dog, they, all of them kids and boyfriend, we off to the local shop, you have to cross a big field to get to it. She said they let it off on the field and she nipped to the shop and left them there. When she got back the attack was in process.

The boyfriend told me he got the dog for the kids. The girl, the one that is not disabled wants to take the dog out for walks, she only about 7 I have seen the young girl out playing with the dog at the back where it attacked Poppy, it was off lead and she was throwing a ball for it.

I will mention about the rescue and if they have a behaviourist, in fact they do I have just remembered they got the dog from the same place we got Ben.

I did mention the classes we take Ben & Poppy too, but, you know what? I have never seen a Staffy their so your probs right on the button hun.

I did tell her this morning that she shouldn't really be having the dog offlead as this is the second time it has happened. I asked her if she knew any history and she said no. I didn't know it was a rescue until this morning, I thought they had the dog from a pup.

The boyfriend told us that he had a pit bull and that that had never shown any aggression at all. But when the attacks happened he just screams and says things like, Beat it's head in!!!! he said that to us and the girl said he said the same thing to the other owner.

She did say the dog was fine around the kids, but the little un can't defend himself he's blind and has cerebal palsy, cant walk etc etc, at lot like my son.

Hi Elaine,

TBH they sound like they need some training !! ( the boyfriend sounds like an idiot IMO and just the sort of owners that let staffies down big time...)

Having said all of that i wonder if the rescue were informed that they arent coping with this dog and not being responsible with it, might help, after all most rescues will provide a contract stating that if they are not happy with the care they have the right to remove the dog, perhaps that would be the best option for everyone, or perhaps just simply someone "official" paying them a visit regarding responsible dog ownership might give them a kick up the backside to take control of their dog. I say again, i really dont deem the dog a threat to the kids, but it really shouldnt be allowed to be offlead if it shows aggression like this, and they shouldnt be allowed to get away with it. remind me again the outcome of the westie owners and what actually happened regarding the staffie owners??

it seems like these people are not learning their lesson and I just feel sorry for the dog as its eventually going to end in disaster for it/ another dog or its going to get put down...

The westie turned out to be a Maltese but as far as I know nothing has transpired over responsibily. The Maltese is now very nervous as is the owner, he is a bag of nerves walking that dog. He did report it to the police and the local dog warden but I have not hear anything of the outcome.
I will have a long hard think on this and let you know.
