What do you teach your puppies?

Hocus will be 15 weeks on monday and is like a little sponge

If you have got or have had a pup what are you or did you teach at this age?

House training and soft mouth training. Don't pester when we are eating.

Sit, down, stay, retrieve, leave, give, drop, twirlies ().

Sit she came with. Down was a natural progression, as was sit and stay. She loves to play so retrieve games game easily and the drop was taught as part of the game. Leave started with leave the toy when you've dropped it (don't grab hands) and moved on to leave the treat etc. She also loves to play tug so give was taught as part of that game. Drop has come pretty naturally for some reason. She's a pup that likes to pick up everything she sees so not good on a walk, but now she does drop what she's picked up when asked to.

She's not so hot on loose lead walking at the moment but it is starting to improve a little.

Another little sponge so training is mostly done in play mixed in with some lure and reward training.

Same sort of things really.
Housetraining, bite inhibition, leave it.

Sit he knew down is proving a bit more of a trial. Recall which I expect will go out of the window when he hits 6 months. Time alone. He seems to be less worried if I actually pop out but if I dissapear upstairs he sits at the bottom of the stairs crying he eventually settles but takes a while.

House training and then wait, leave and heel (which I use for recall) - just what they need to keep them safe really

Apart from housetraining and normal domestics eg walking on a lead, bite inhibition, alone training door, car and food manners and heavy socialisation and habituation

By 15 weeks my pups will already be doing

100 yard sendaways
stand/sit/down (as per distance control and positions on the move)
recalls
retrieves
searching
tracking
speaks
foundations of heelwork

I suppose it all depends if you have something specific in mind, so i'm assuming obedience and agility will be on the cards for Hocus?

When my dogs were pups, I didnt really have anything specific in mind which I wanted to do with them so I just did the basics and instilled manners (or not in Flynn's case). If I had my time with them again, I would be laying the foundations for formal retrieves, whistle training, longer stays, sendaways etc - all the things which are needed for agility, obedience and gundog work.

From what you showed me on the park Katie, I think you are well ahead in your training.
