Is it ok to put oil on a dogs coat?

Does anyone do this?
An elderly gentleman I met out walking raved about coconut oil on everything from his hair to a dog's coat. I'm not sure about putting oil on a dog (without washing out) as I thought it would attract dirt.

Bet the dog never stops licking. Don't think it would do any good and depending on the amount it may do harm.

coconut milk is supposed to be good for the skin and folicles ..maybe the old boy was confused . or is using oil instaed of milk .. you can use coconut milk as a type of natural conditioner , but rinse it off after a few mins when its work is done .

Thanks everyone. I definitely won't be going down that route.

Bless him - I've met him a couple of times and he keeps reminding me about coconut oil and pulling off his cap to show me his greasy mane.

LOL...what do you say to him! That is one of those situations where you try and be polite but feel you have to say something soon to stop the topic from going on because they feel like you are really interested and think it's a good idea...lol
