Introducing a puppy to my older dog...

This may seem like a silly question but I would like some information or guidance if you like on how to introduce a puppy to an older dog...
My dog has no problems with other dogs when outside but I'm just a bit worried about in our house as it's her territory.

Do I need a crate for the puppy or my older dog? I'm worried that if I put my older dog in the crate she may think shes being punished for something she hasn't done and make things a bit difficult.

Any information any of you have would be muchly appreciated

I wouldn't put an older dog in a crate if it isn't used to it. On the other hand, all my puppies start off in a crate and stay in it for several months (or until I feel I can trust them! - sorry, I obviously don't mean permanently!). I usually take a new puppy straight out into the garden and let them all get acquainted under close supervision.

Make sure you give your existing dog lots of assurances but don't expect them to get on straight away. Mine usually ignore a puppy until it's old enough to play with. One of mine really doesn't like puppies and will still tell my 6 month old pup off but then he has health issues.

I would be careful about feeding them together until you are sure your older one isn't going to guard his food. I would feed the puppy in the crate anyway to start with and I used to give the others a treat when the puppy was getting his more frequent meals.

You will know your own dog and how he appears to be reacting but don't leave them alone together for a few weeks until you are absolutely sure.

Yeah, I wouldn't ever leave them unattended at all.
I think I'll feed them in separate rooms for a while then as my dog gets a bit protective over food and toys etc.

I've heard taking them both on walks together, obviously on leads helps?

I got my mum to take Teg (5 years) out the house before I got home with Hocus (7 weeks when I got him). Settled Hocus in a pen and then brought Teg in and let them meet through the pen. I was on Tegs side.
If it's a young pup surely it won't be able to go a walk until it's had its vaccinations?

dont worry so much, if you know your older dog, then make sure you get off on a good note.let your older dog sniff and investigate, hold the pup and put on the floor if you are comfortable.never leave them alone untill you feel its right and i use a creat for pups done right it a safe den for a dog,not a place of punishment or never a dog sitter for 12 hours at a time,i use them as tools to manage and for a dog to relax in.there optional for dog ownership, pros and cons.respectfully..all i say is ..pics please and have fun.

Personally, I don't walk my puppies with my older dogs until they are at least six months old (just starting to take my current puppy out with the others) partly to avoid any accidents or over-stressing little joints and partly to try and get the puppy to focus on me. However, I don't do a lot of lead walking.
