Camping with dog

We are planning g to go camping with our puppy in August. She will be approx 5 months old. At home she sleeps in a crate within a playpen down stairs.( playpen shut, crate left open). She is fine with this and does not cry at all ( or soil/wet in crate or playpen). We have a vw t5 converted camper which we all sleep in (2 adults and 3 kids - cosy!). Do you think she will be ok in the awning by herself with the same set up? - I am a panicker re security which is why we all cram into the van together!
My husband assures me we will hear if anyone tries to take her or she needs us. What do you think????

Is the awning one that can be closed, or is it just a top and sides with an open front?

It is all closed in- like a proper tent, but fixes to the side of the van.

Having tent camped for many years when my children were young [plus a dog] I cannot understand why two adults and three children would squash into a van to sleep when you have a proper tent awning.
