Brilliant shot! He is no doubt surveying his kingdom!

Lol here's hoping! Maybe he got lost and needs to survey the area to find his missing lake. We have a heron that sits in the big fir tree up the back of our house quite often, but usually, he's in the duck pond over in the woods. They seem to be quite solitary birds don't they, always see just the one whenever I've seen them. Great pic you got of him there

There's one that lives on the waterfall on the river and another one lives on the canal. Like Helena says they are usually on their own apart from certain times of the year when I see 2 of them

They are lone hunters and notoriously 'territorial' Helena and respect the territory of other herons apparently. I've never seen more than one Heron hanging about wherever I've spotted one. I had the smallest outdoor fishpond on the planet in Paignton and a Heron perched on the side of that! Emptied it in a few seconds flat (well after I saw the Heron I never saw any of my fish again!)

They nest in trees though, we used to have a heron's nest every spring right opposite where I lived in a fir tree. Every year they went back to that next, but the rest of the year they didn't seem to be together.

The one in your picture looks like he's having a bit of a reflective moment

The funniest part was the crow to the left of him sidling up to have a closer look!

I walked out my front door with my young son a few years ago and saw a heron perched on the roof opposite my house, son thought it was a flying dinosaur
