Kennel cough or normal cough?

Sorry if this is a silly question but how can you tell the difference between kennel cough and a normal cough? Moon has a minor cough and has only had it for three days. He went to the vets today for his annual vaccinations and I mentioned the cough to the vet. He said he didn't know if it was kennel cough or not. Moon is now on Benylin.

We were signed up to start training classes tomorrow and now we can't go Gutted. But now I need to figure out how infectious he is and how long I need to keep him away from other dogs. Are there any symptoms specific to kennel cough?

Id imagine any bacterial cough to be K.cough. unless caused by a damage tempory or otherwise to Windpipe. lungs. Im not sure though, happy to be educated!!!!!!

hi
kennel cough is 'infectious laryingitis'
it is worth treating your dog for 'lungworm' too,to rule it out.
imo i wouldnt go to classes, just in case it is k.c.
i hope moon feels better soon.

He said he was ok to have his regular vaccination as it's a very mild cough but he wouldn't give him a kennel cough vaccine while he is coughing. He recommended we got back 2 weeks after it clears up to give him a kennel cough vaccination. How regularly do people get KC vaccinations? He does socialise with other dogs down the park every day so is he at risk enough to have a yearly one?

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression that kennel cough was a particular strain of bacteria, didn't know it was a general term, so thanks!

Went along to the training class without the dog today, what a wally did I feel LOL but at least we can do it with him at home now.

hi
the kc vaccine only covers one particular strain 'bordetella'
it is a personal choice to vaccinate against this or not, bearing in mind also, that some kennels/training clubs require it.
if you do decide to,imo would wait a little longer than 2 weeks.
have you treated him for lungworm yet? we treat any coughing dog for this routinely as it is a very nasty(and now sadly common)parasite.

No, he hasn't had any treatment for lungworm. I'll look into it. Thanks!

If you have access to You Tube, there are some veterinary videos on some of the different coughs. I have been investigating my older dog's cough.

Here is a great link to kennel cough. [link removed]
You can also ask a question to a vet, too (no charge). You are wise to be making these inquiries as kennel cough can be very contagious! Good luck and I hope your pooch feels better soon.
