I personally can't see anything wrong with the way yours are kept, they are housed as they would be indoors, possibly better from what you describe (underfloor heating), and obviously well loved and cared for.

I did wonder, horrific isn't it. I've offered so many times to help her out, to go round during the day and feed them, change their water but she won't have any of it, she's set in her ways and doesn't want me interfering. I asked if I could at least look after the GSDbitch for her, not in my home as she doesn't know me but to go round and check on everything but again, she said no because I would just upset everyone.

A friend of mine, who has a heart of gold and would do anything for you, has 9 dogs that live in a converted garage. She works full time (not demeaning her for that, most of us have to work), but she doesn't see them from one day to the next, she just throws kibble at them when she thinks they need it, they all live in separate partitions with a small run, about the size of a small cupboard and there is no heating or any blankets in their beds. So they can't even cuddle up together when it's cold. She tells me mine are pampered and that missing the odd meal never does a dog any harm. Well it would kill mine I'm sure, they wouldn't survive how her dogs do (they are GSD's and Australian Shepherds). Even when she is not at work she isn't with them, she probably spends one evening a week with them to groom them etc., most weekends she is out either watching dog shows or attending seminars. I have told her my thoughts but she just thinks I'm weird in the way I treat mine, she has twice come home to find a dead dog in a run, both of them relatively young, she also came home to find her younf GSD bitch had whelped, of 8 pups only 3 survived because she continued to go off to work and just left the bitch and the pups to fend for themselves, no extra food, heating anything. Its people like that, who call themselves dog lovers that really get my goat.

i knew a person like that one of the best bred dogs in ireland she had at the time i took her,my precouis zoey, she was like a bag of bones,so skinny, and when she brought her up to mine her husband said, how are your dogs so fat?i said try feeding them(they wasnt fat just well fed and cared for)i reported her, shed left a golden retriever to pup outside in a cattle trailer,by time shed noticed all pups and mom dead, the uspca took the lot, dogs, cattle, and horses, worse case ever thank god i got zoey first,

That is appalling - such active breeds too Can't you talk her into rehoming them? Why on earth does she have dogs at all?

Good discussion subject.

I know some don't approve at all.

I too prefer them in the house with me at all times. Although I have threatened to build one just as a 'drying off' kennel for the winter when we get back from walks! And I might just do that later this year but that wouldn't be 24/7 in the kennels.

For me I would like to think that as long as they get human interaction and do get to spend time with the family and are happy then why not?

Having said that - when buying a puppy now I think I would choose from house reared dog (obviously not the only criteria) than from dogs Kennel reared (in my breed).

I personally have my dogs living inside with me. I prefer it and the dogs prefer it.
However it is not my general personal view. I don't have a problem with dogs being outside if they are kenelled correctly and still have the companionship that a house dog gets.
I've said it before on a previous post. That keeping dogs inside is a lot more down to the owners preference for there dogs but alot of dogs are far happier being outside because of their breed, coat thickness in our warm houses etc.
My dogs live in, my boys litter brother would never settle in the house. He now has a kennel and he has free reign around the garden. He is much happier being outside. Still comes in whenever he likes in the day and the evening. But sleeps outside.

I have tried and I don't know why she keeps getting them. Because she's always at shows and seminars people hold her in high esteem and think she is wonderful. She is also really good friends with a dog warden in Essex who has given her two GSD bitches, both with all KC paperwork. One of them was the poor thing that had the pups recently. Either this warden is under the wrong impression of the home these dogs have got, or she's just shifting a problem elsewhere. I think the latter as the bitch was actually pregnant by her (the wardens) own dog

I got someone to report her to the RSPCA, I know I should have done it myself but I think deep down she loves them and I know how I would feel if mine got taken away from me. Stupid I know but it felt as if I wasn't actually doing it to my friend. Anyway, they came and gave her a warning for it being covered in excrement but they thought the housing was adequate and the dogs were in ok condition, so she hasn't learned anything by it as she has added two more pups to the colony since then.

I'm truly shocked to have read about this lady - how can she be allowed to own dogs/pets at all! Of course the problem is that as they are fed/watered can anything be done - what was the new law regarding acting out natural behaviours?? taking better of our dogs?
