Swollen vulva on spayed dog

Asking for a friend, she has a 6yr old staffie x whippet who was spayed when she was 4. She's text me saying the dogs vulva has swollen like it would in a season and it hasnt been like that for 2 years. As she is worried Ive told her ill ask around. Anyone know if this is normal or what could be up please?

Could she have an infection? Probably best to take her to the vets.

I think you might be right Ju, been googling and all Im coming up with is retained womb tissue or an infection, my mate said theres no discharge but Sasha the dog doesnt seem comfortable and is licking occassionally.

Hi, I found some good information on the topic on this website: http://www.vetinfo.com/vets/answers/swollen-dog-vulva

"A possible cause of a swollen vulva in a spayed female dog is vaginitis or inflammation of the lower genital tract. Usually dogs that have vaginitis are drinking and urinating more frequently and often start having urinary accidents in the house. Sometimes a diagnosis of vaginitis can be made on physical examination alone. Sometimes a urine sample or a swab of vulvar secretions is needed to determine if there is an infection within the urogenital tract. It is recommended to have your dog examined by your local veterinarian as soon as possible. Due to the age of your pet it would be a good idea to have blood work evaluated as well to see if there is an underlying illness that predisposed your pet to developing an infection. If vaginitis is diagnosed your pet will likely be prescribed oral antibiotics and it will be recommended that you clean your pet's vulvar region with non-scented baby wipes after whenever your pet urinates."
