Two year old girl mauled by staffie...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...re/6602975.stm

Its interesting how it states staffies are not a breed restricted under the dangerous dogs act and yet "a decision on whether a criminal offence had been committed" would be made in the next few days.

Its very sad that, although all attacks should be reported, I do think that just reporting the basics before everything is known does no one any favours. Doubt we'll ever change that though.

Deed not breed.... the only staffies I've ever known were wonderful family dogs.

they are probably referring to the non breed sections of the DDA.

although that does refer to any dog being dangerously out of control in a public place. hence the DDA cannot be applied inside the dogs' own home.

or they may not be be referring to dog legislation at all. for example, ellie lawrensons grandmother has been charged with manslaughter.

OH dear its always sad when any child is hurt by any breed ,but all too often people tend to say b****y dog put it down etc etc, and to be fair who knows what we each would say if it was our child but to be fair also they never tell you what the child might have been doing to the dog,and why again was'nt an adult there ,i agree that all the staffies i've ever known have been great people dogs ,even if their not good with other dogs ,having said all that i hope the child is going to be ok and not too badly scared .

it says the dog has no history of aggression and also that the owners fully support putting the dog to sleep

to me that is the act of a responsible owner. they realise that although there was formerly no risk, that dog now poses a threat

some might say that putting the dog to sleep is too far but this isnt just a bit of a nip. the attack was bad enough to leave a child in hospital

its a shame and i feel sorry for both parties, the girl and the dog

There will always be cases of dogs biting . I wonder if the dog was in pain from an undiagnosed illness or hadn't been socialised with small children who tend to screech and makes unpredictable movements.

I would never let a strange two year old child near my dog for the the good of the dog as well as the child ..very sad for all concerned
