Max getting back on track at agility - happy again.

4 weeks ago at agility Max was charged and nearly attacked by another dog from the other class that runs alongside.

Understandably since then Max has lost his confidence and has not had the usual enjoyment for agility.

We have had to resort to him being on a lead to avoid him running out the gate to go home - which I must admit I have felt pretty bad at doing - but was assured he just needs his confidence building back up.

The first week back after the attach didn't help in that the 'aggressive dog' charged at a trainer and that barking was enough to send him into having a fear of the place. I felt all the hard work we had done since January was totally wasted and that are agility fun was over.

Last week I didn't go as wanted to give him a break from the place to see if that would help.

Well I am so pleased to say that last night we seemed to be back on track - Max still back on lead running the course but he was taking treats as a reward (he should absolutely no interest in any treat including his faves).

It was so nice to see him tail up running the course (me trying to keep up) with that Setter enthusiasm from before. I was only giving it another week before I decided that it wasn't fair to push him to do something he didn't enjoy. (If I didn't know he was enjoying it at home then I would have quit fullstop).

I'm hoping that next week we can progress to being back off lead - so far the other dog hasn't been back but my worry I guess is that when it does come back that it won't take much to knock our confidence again?

I am joining a new club at a new venue in September that runs one class - therefore only one dog at a time so all other dogs will be under control and therefore no issue regarding a loose aggressive dog again.

But just so happy last night that Max started to enjoy himself again

Sounds like the other dog should not be off lead doing agility to me. the rights of the many over those of the one in my book.
Glad to hear he is back on track. I am looking forward to some more fab pics of tje lovely Max on his agility eqp.

Thanks Fudgeley - will get some pics again soon - my daughter came last night so hopefully can get her to take some shots even though she is only 8!!!

And I have made my comments to the trainers at the club regarding the dog being off lead and aggressive - their duty regarding providing a safe place to train.

So sorry to hear about Max's upset, but very good news that he sounds like he is enjoying it again.

Like Fudgely I'm looking forward to seeing more photos

Poor Max, hope his confidence comes back and he continues to enjoy himself. Its such a pity when other people allow their dogs to ruin things for others.

Big hugs to gorgeous Max, (and the others so they don't feel left out). xx

You are absolutely right that there is a duty to all who attend, and frankly its disturbing to hear of a club allowing dogs to be in that situation.
I do allow people to train with me if their dog has an aggression issue but boy is it carefully done.

If classes are run side by side I do think they should have enclosures for each ring especially as new dogs, aggressive or not, can tend to run to other dogs to socialise let alone to attack.
I use one ring for training and that is enclosed albeit it just good netting to create a visual barrier, and only one dog off lead at a time so that a dog running around out of the ring is`nt a distraction while dogs are learning in the ring - the early stages are so important for a handler and dog to work as a team so that the dogs focus stays in the ring.
Aggressive dogs often benefit from some one to one sessions so that they can develop a really positive attitude toward doing the agility rather than seeing targets everywhere then carefully brought into a class situation with every possible preventative measure taken for safety.

I`m so glad Max is getting his confidence back, I`m sure he`ll be able to put the incident behind him with the care you are putting into it for him

I am so pleased that his is enjoying it I really did think he wasn't going to - I really took my time and didn't push him to much.

Hugs passed on to everyone they send lots of very wet kisses back Sheree!

The dog hasn't been back since not sure if they have decided that its not fair on others or just away for the summer?

Patch they have but up a barrier now but sadly for us it is too late - the dog has been known to charge out but never made it to another dog until Max.

Max is happy in the garden so I hoped it would be a matter of time before he could put it behind him - I just hope the other dog owner has decided to try and resolve the aggression before coming back as the noise from it would be enough I think to upset Max again.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Rachel and Maxy
