He is a rescue and a bit over three years old.

I think there is such truth in what you have written. I believe it is very much a two way street when it comes to learning.

Your dog learns from you and not just the verbal. I put my boots on and he knows the score. And I can tell from his stance when he has spotted a cat. Or a magpie.

A poke in the ribs when he wants to eat - lots of little things are all part of the communication process.

Good that you have a rescue. Often dogs that are discarded, miss treated, escaped, but do need a "forever" home.
