Malassezia

Does anyone use anything other than Malaseb to treat this?

My retriever never seems to be clear of it

1 Do you use a grain free diet?
2 Do you give your dog daily probiotics?

Both of the above may tackle the CAUSE rather than alleviate the symptoms.

I should have mentioned that he was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism 4 years ago as well as beef/malassezia & meadow fescue allergy.
His problems started then, the vets recommended JWB which he had been on since (has rice in it) & recently I've changed him to CSJ senior which has maize in it.

Do you think it could be grain related?

He doesn't have probiotics, are these dairy based?

Thanks

Malessezzia is a yeast overgrowth therefore anything that feeds yeast ie sugar should be avoided, Grains are carbohydrates and thus sugars.

Most of the OTC probiotics are dairy based but you can get ones that are not dairy based.

I use Healthspan which have 20 BILLION bacteria of 5 different strains, the advantage of these is that they do not need to be refrigerated and as they are capsules, they can be swallowed without spillage.

Thank you. Good to see the capsules are gelatine free too . We'll give these a go. S'pose that means changing the food too

You could try the probiotics for 6 weeks before changing the food to see if they make sufficient difference, but IMO I would change to a grain free if poss.
