Trash: 7 mo old getting into trash

Trash rampage problem.
We have a 7 month old German shepherd that gets into our trash. We know dogs are opportunistic and he's now learned to put the trash into his search pattern.
We've tried the 'shock' matt which works great as long as we remember to put it down. But every time we forget, he doesn't.
We keep the trash covered in our kitchen, recycle and garbage. Save relocating it does anybody know how to break a dog from getting into the trash?
We've had 6 dogs over the years; this is the first to get into our trash. This is our second German shepherd.

Best option IMO is to move the trash bin out of his way.

The easiest and quickest way to sort the problem would be to relocate your bin out of reach.

Is he doing it while you are there or not?
