Have you discussed all the poop to be lifted, walking in the rain and snow, cleaning up occasional sick, vets bills.....

If he's still determined to go ahead with it, I guess all you can do is be there to offer as much help and advice as possible for the sake of the wee critter. And def get him signed up for puppy classes. Perhaps as a welcome prezzie for the pup some decent books on dog behaviour/training?

Rather you than me. Good luck!

yep - everything

its apiece of cake apparantly.......

im really at a loss... im going to get trainig classes sorted etc but i can guarantee you the dog will not goto one....and the breed that hes getting - it needs socialising more -

basically this dog is being bought as a guard dog - because mine are so well behaved he thinks is easy to train them etc.......

I would tell him straight.

Also if he really won't listen, try telling him that in order to be a guard dog, the dog would need extensive training - as you don't want a guard dog who could potentially end up getting destroyed for not being able to stop on command.....

Advise him that dog classes are a great place to start!

and 'training' it as a guard dog,,, i even went as far as suggesting a lab - imo tat would be better - but noooooooo

because his mate has one, he wants one.....

I think this is the kind of argument that would work best on your friend by the sound of it - that if it goes wrong and he doesn't train the dog properly, he could end up loosing his job and/or getting sued.

i tol dhim about training - he wont listen

i said to him - ive had dogs all my life - they dont need to be trained as guard dogs - mine bark becuase they do....!!

he asked me when we can go look at rescue places (becauase they are cheaper.....) i suggested a rescue as they might just tell him what ive been telling him??

im trying guys i really am but i think im about to let down the entire reputaion of one of these breeds....

If he really wants a dog and there is no talking him out of it, then put him in touch with any of the German Shepherd breed rescues in this country and I am fairly confident that not one will allow one of their dogs go to a home where they are primarily a "guard dog"!

There is nothing wrong in having a guarding breed so long as it is trained, socialised, exercised, loved and respected. Any of the guarding breeds will bark to protect their owner and property automatically without any kind of training and that is fine. It is when a dog is solely being kept as a guard dog and is encouraged to be aggressive and even to bite someone then that is a different story.

As Lorna said, I would just tell him straight!

Tell him any dog , or breed should I say will protect its property, he doesn't have to go full on guard dog, any way he'd need to train it to turn it into a guard dog and I presume thats not what he will or want to be bothered doing, also the implications of telling people its a guard dog in a public place will start a war on whether the dog should be allowed or near the area of the pub, he wants some thing his clientel will accept not hate him for !
Keep at him you've still got time xx
