Troubled Border Collie

Hi everyone, I joined this site as I need to find something to make a beautiful border collie a nicer dog to know. He is perfect with family (the ones he knows well) very loyal and loving. However outside the house and particulary with other dogs he is another beastie completly. he gets lots of excercise and playing etc but I thought perhaps a dog agility class if there is one near me in Essex might help with his socialisation.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome, do you mean your boy is dog aggressive or just that he's over bouncy?
Or something else?

Agilty may be the way to go, or if there are problems you might like to try a one to one trainer or a good reputable, modern behaviourist?

Can you give us more info on his behaviour?

What actually is it that he does? Is he aggressive with other dogs? I think if he is you need to understand why he is aggressive first, before taking him to an agility class.

As with the others have said we need some more details

Also even if he is just a bit bouncy with other dogs it might be an idea to look at a regular training class for a little while first so he gets used to working with you and listning to you with the distraction of other dogs about

Agility is great for dogs but you need to have a little control with them FIRST and some basic commands around other dogs as most agility classes will just be teaching the agility and expect you to have control of the basics

It is a bit difficult to suggest a potential route without really knowing what the issues are.

To find a trainer here are some links:

http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/se...g/Default.aspx

You will note that Epping and District Dog Club has a KCAI which is a benchmark for excellence and will tell you if the person has reached a high standard in pet training, agility etc etc.

But you may need a behaviourist and reputable ones will ONLY see you via a vet referral in order to discount any medical conditions.
