Land needed to exercise my dog

I have a rescued Saluki x Collie who was attacked by two dogs when she was young. She now has a very bad fear aggression with other dogs which makes walking her an impossible thing to do. I have taken her to socialization classes and also on a problem dog course (which cost me £20 an hour) and obviously nothing has worked in the slightest. I am looking for a big SECURE piece of land where she can run and play freely. I will pick up any mess she makes and am willing to pay for the time spent there. Please can anyone help us?

I forgot to say i am in Port Talbot, South Wales.

Hi Tracy I see you are in beautiful South Wales, do you have transport, you are surrounded by magnificent countryside with lots of empty public footpaths.

If you have transport I would buy an ordnance survey map and a long line and head for the hills. There are bound to be some enclosed small fields with dog free footpaths

When I stay in Wales and walk I can go all day without seeing man or dog..

There are a lot of dog training schools in South Wales. I don't know where they are in relation to where you live but would it be worth contacting them and asking if you can use an enclosed training field when it is free?

Thanks both for your replies I do actually live near a mountain but theres always dog walkers everywhere. Anywhere else would be some distance to get to.
The dog training fields would be a brilliant idea, i was thinking of asking the RSPCA in Swansea and if they do charge, well at least it will be going to help their rescue dogs as well

also worth asking at boarding kennels, I know of one of up here who has an excellent enclosed area and perfect for letting dogs off.

I feel your pain, my dog can be aggressive with other dogs, we only let him offlead at weekends when we go into the fields and you can see for miles that there is nothing there, its a different way of dog walking but makes when they are offlead so enjoyable for them xx

Its such a shame as she absolutely loves going out but its got to the point now that she's even dangerous in the car because she's scanning everywhere for a dog and goes crazy when she sees one. It takes all of my strength to hold her from jumping over my fathers head (he's the driver). Safety harnesses are a waste of time as she clicks the seat belt open when she's going frantic. Its got so bad that we have had to change our car from a Volvo to a Skoda Roomster so that we can buy a crate and put it in the back to keep her and us safe. We should be having that next month. I know Saluki's are very vocal but my god, everybody stops in their tracks when she starts, you would swear she's being killed! I hate the fact people look at me in disgust as if to say "cant you even control your dog"? If only they knew
Anyways, ive emailed the RSPCA so just waiting for a reply. Fingers crossed!

Good luck with finding somewhere.

Is she insured? if so, your insurance company might cover the cost of a behaviourist. If she really is as reactive as you say, then socialization classes/problem dog classes are going to be far too overwhelming for her (as you have seen). It sounds as though she needs very slow desensitization and a good behaviorist should be able to help you with that.

i think i would also agree regards the slow desensitisation, my dog has been introduced very carefully to a couple of female dogs who he now loves, and can play offlead with, yet he would go for anything else when walking past.

It is horrible when people act like you have created a monster too - although I get people grabbing their children away and their small dogs get lifted when mine starts - being a staffie I think they assume I will just let him eat their dogs / children !!

Hi,
I have the same problem with my girl and was lucky enough to get a greyhound racing kennels to let me use thier big fenced in 4.5acre field for my dogs to run loose in and play.
They now also hire it out to others but you have it exclusively to yourself for the time you book it. I do travel almost 10 miles each way to use the field each day though.
Have a look round your area and see if there are any kennels of any sort that have fenced in paddocks that they would be willing for you to hire at certain times.
Be prepared to have to travel to it if you have to.
Its lovely to let your dog run free and be able to totally relax yourself, so well worth the effort in finding a place.

I'm sorry I don't know anywhere in wales. But we take our troublesome one to an agility 1-1 class in a large enclosed arena in Sandbach, Cheshire...but you can also hire the arena out without tuition but with all the agility stuff for £10 an hour (It's only actually £2 more for the 1-1 tuition and it REALLY wears her out, and includes training and dogs are around and about outside so it helps her with her socialisation skills a little-from a safe distance!)

Maybe enquire at agility training places near you?
