Used to have a fiesta but Benson out grew the boot, so changed to a Ford focus.
I love the focus and it has plenty of room in it! Could easily get 2 big dogs in it
Ok on insurance too.

I have a Renault Scenic at the moment which is great for two large doodles, but have ordered a Ford S-Max Titanium. Hubby has the Skoda Fabia estate which is actually a VW/Audi - that too is huge in the boot for dogs etc.

The next size up in estates is quite a lot bigger than the escort. I don't really want a car that is too big because we live in narrow lanes. I was wondering about a small van. Any suggestions?

Yes, a friend of mine has the Peugeot Kangu, it looks a bit "noddyish", but when she opened the back to let her labradoodle in there, it's sooooo spascious and like a van, but has all the windows like a car, I think it's great and it's very LOW for the dogs to climb into! She said they only got it to transport the dog, they have their own car for going out! Take a look at one, I'm quite tempted myself!

I have a ford focus C-Max. The boot is huge however, I took the back seats out of mine and use it as a dog van. I can fit 5 large breed dogs comfortably in the back of my C-Max.

Ours is the 2l diesel version which is quite economical. The only things you have to watch out for are fault EGR valves, and the tyres can wear quite quickly.

Edited to add:
I pay £700 a year for myself and my partner to be insured to drive the C-Max that's with me having 1 year no claims bonus and is with Direct Line which I've always found to be cheaper.

We paid £5600 for our 54 plate car in August of last year and it had 55,000 miles on the clock. I got £4600 in part exchange for my 06 plate fiesta so only had to pay £1000 in cash.

They are quite hard to find though. I got mine from Bristol and live in Salisbury.

I used to have a suzuki grand vitara xl7. It was originally a 7 seater but we took the back 2 seats out to give the dogs more room. Great heightwise too but it had a huge thirsty engine so was expensive to run!
Got a Citroen Nemo van now. Very economical, great for the dogs as it has loads of headroom, a proper built in partition to keep them safely in the back & a side opening door. Being a van only has 2 seats though.

I dont think you could do better than look for a second hand Citroen Berlingo.

They have a HUGE boot - easily big enough for any large dog and a decent sized interior too. If you look online you can get them with air con, cd player etc.

I went on holiday in mine and had the dog cage in tthe boot and still had room at the side of it to put suitcases etc, and it's got loads of little compartments, dead handy for keeping dog blankets/coats etc too without cluttering up the inside of the car.

You could pick a second hand one up for a reasonable price if you have a look round.

Here's a bit from a Jeremy Clarkson review a couple of years ago - this is for a new one obviously but gives you a bit of ab idea of his view -

"Prices start at less than £11,000, which is very low for something with this amount of interior space. It rides more smoothly than a Jaguar XJ8 - they should have called it the Aeroglisseur - and it is the first car ever to come with a loft. I mean it. There is an internal roofbox into which, I’m fairly certain, you could fit a pair of modern-day skis. And that’s just the start. There are so many cubbyholes and oddment stowage boxes that you could hide a priest in there and never find him again.

The car I tested had a 90 horsepower diesel, which meant I couldn’t go very fast. But on the long straight between Shipston on Stour and Chipping Norton, I did get past a tractor in just 18 minutes. So it’s not the end of the world. And better still, it should do 40mpg easily.

It’s a good car, the Berlingo. And in these difficult times, it makes even more sense than usual. "

I am on my second one now, and don't think I would ever want a different car

Iv'e just been looking on a well known auction site and there are some really cheap Citroen Berlingo's.
I agree with Kalasin that the Focus C Max has plenty of room and i had the 2L TDCI model aswell but sold it to my brother as he was after a towing vehicle.
My other half drives a Ford Fusion 1.6 TDCI which is very economical and will give 65mpg but i can't see how you would comfortably fit a GSD in the boot space.
At the moment i drive a Fiat Scudo 2L van which has twin side opening doors with the back crated out plus 3 seats in the front.
Over the years i have had many cars from Landrovers,Suzuki, to a Nissan X trail and to be honest if you want something comfortable with plenty of space you can't go wrong with a van. They are an ideal height for your dog to get in and out and you should be able to pick one up fairly cheap.
I'm probably a lot older than you [Kirsty] but my insurance is only £154 per year fully comprehensive for my van....Cheers..Ian.

i though the boot on a fusion was quite big?? Hes not a huge gsd, he would easily fit into say a golf hatchback.
