My experience

when my wife thought we weren't getting enough excercise and suggested getting a dog to make us go out I contacted local adoption agencies but was turned down because we don't have a gate on our driveway, even though I protested that the dog would only ever be allowed out on a lead. I suppose they have to be ultra-cautious. We 'rescued' our dog two years ago - long story - and we still don't have a gate. It didn't take long to teach Thor the boundaries of our garden - I think he worked them out for himself quite quickly - and no longer seems to feel the urge to wander. He doesn't want to go out unless he is being taken for a walk, he wants one of us with him all the time and that's fine by me.

I do not have a front gate either however my dogs are NEVER allowed out except on a lead, IME dogs which are boundary trained often die when they ignore that training.

In my fully fenced and enclosed back garden they are of course allowed to be out there with no restrictions.

We don't have a front gate either, the boys do not go out of the front door (even though we have a long drive) if they don't have their leads on. I don't even remember teaching them that ?!

We don't have a front gate either-we just have a small open-plan front garden. The dogs are never allowed out without a lead attached to them and they have been taught to wait for me to proceed out of the door first for safety reasons (we have a high moggy population and there just might be one sitting on the doormat one day!).

Insecure gardens are a magnet for dog thieves.

We don't have gates, but I don't allow mine out there, their boundary stops at the front door unless they are going out and they have leads on as we have a busy road

I took the OP`s post to mean the gate to the garden the dog uses.

Ah gotcha!
We don't have a gate (or fences for that matter) at the front but the boys aren't allowed out there on their own.
We have a very secure (padlocked and bolted) high side gate to the back garden which is fully secure (no other entrance to the back other than through the garage). The boys are allowed to play in the garden at the back - that is when the chickens aren't taking advantage of my good nature
