Red itchy ear what could it be?

I have just noticed my boy has been really itching his ear...
Had a look and its really red the underside of the flappy bit

There no discharge its clean and fine in the deep bit of the ear but the flaps really red and he keeps trying to scratch it which is making it redder!
Any advise or what do you think it the matter with it?

Is there any bites on it - like midgey bites?

My dogs (especially the staffy) have got a few insect bites on their bellies. I put calamine cream on them.

It doesnt smelly and inside the ear is clean and looks normal...hes not shaking his head or anything?
But the underside of the flappy bit from the tip to maybe the middle of the flap is read and itchy?

I cant see any bites?

Do you think benadryl would help?

From what you're describing, isn't that where there's a crevice?? Can you get a tea tree wipe or something, and get in that crevice gently and maybe pull something out which is annoying him? Maybe it's a bit of hard wax stuck there, coz Georgie gets that sometimes? Do you mean right at the base of the ear where the flap joins?

Oh...no my describing is rubbish!
Its the tip of the ear to the middle part of the ear, that hangs down...but not the furry side!
Im confusing my self know!
The inside ear looks fine....he just keeps scratching the ear flap and its red and itchy!
