I think the term 'pedigree' is misleading, any dog can have a pedigree it is simply a list of ancestors. I much prefer the term pure bred dog, which to me means one of recognisable type and breeds true, it's KC registration status is irrelevant.

A dog that is of a single breed with the appearance of the breed standard. Registration is irrelevant. If it is as Becky states a "pure breed" it will still be a pure breed with or without papers.

Agreed. Papers doth not make a purebred dog.

A Pedigree dog, is any dog with papers of some kind that state the heritage.

KC papers do not guarantee parentage or proof of being purebred either !

I wouldnt call it a pedigree dog as such.

The Meaning of a Pedigree just means that its heritage is stated on paperwork, which includes those registered with the DLR.

It has a pedigree but it isn't pure bred as type hasn't been established nor do they breed true.

Hmmmmmm

I suppose everyone has their own definition of what is pedigree..

To me.. a pedigree is a pure bred dog that can be traced thru its ancestry.. a recognised breed..

Wel that used to be what a Pedigree dog was and should' still be what a pedigree dog is, but with the addition of the DLR and everything else, it no longer stands for what it should.

I wish that Pedigree dog still meant that, but sadly I dont think it ever will again !
