Car Safety Harness

My Lab Barney is getting a bit big to be sitting in the front foot-well of the car now and I'm not sure about putting him in the boot as its a big jump down.
I was thinking of getting a harness and having him on the rear seat but I know nothing about these harness's, never had one.

How do they work?
How far can the dog move?
Does it fix to the seat belt in some way or do I need extra fixings?

He's nearly 5 months now with a chest size of 24 inches
(61 cm). If I get one now will it still fit when he grows or will I need to buy another.

Any recommendations of good ones are very welcome. I'd also like to hear of one's to avoid.

Thanks for any help you can give

Gelert always used a car harness. It fastened onto the seat belt which I always clicked in to fixed position, you dont need fixings. She could move around enough to lie down or turn around as she wanted. Its many years since I bought it and would now look for a harness that could be used in the car and also for walks, which I couldn't do with ours as it wasnt sewn onto fleece backing for comfortable walking without perhaps rubbing (we had a different padded one for walks). I dont actually know if these are available, its just my thoughts!
With ours, you could adjust it enough so that it kind of grew with her....I bought the large size and just got it down to the smallest it would go when she was smaller. There's lots more places to look now than when she was a pup, loads online.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

The harnesses I use come with a car seat attachment https://www.kumfi.com/index.php/onli...harness-detail

The attachment I never used but its a loop of webbing with a clip one end (like a lead has) and a loop so I assume you plug the seat belt in, then clip the harness attachment to the harness, loop it around the seatbelt diagonal bit and clip the loop up with the other end thats already attached to the harness. If that makes sense, these harnesses are adjustable so they have quite a big size range, it gives you sizings at the bottom of the page, hope this helps

Shane,
I have never used one but Halfords sell them. I did consider buying one myself but figured my pup would outgrow it so went for a factory dog guard and he is happy with room to move around. I have noticed the police use individual dog cages in the back of their vans.

I used an RAC harness for Amy, it has a wide chest band. I don't use one for Chloe, she always goes in her folding crate when we travel.

My Bailiie has a Clix car harness, she's been in a harness since the day we collected her at 8 weeks old and hates travelling in the car without it on which I think is fab.
This is her at 9 weeks old....

And this is just recently at 2.5 years old....

It has plenty of padding around the front, the straps are all adjustable and you can use it for walking too but we don't. It just plugs into the seatbelt holder and you can have it longer or shorter - Bailiie has it shorter and has plenty of room for movement; she can sit, lie down, turn round and play with toys where necessary. You can buy them on line and they aren't too expensive and come in a variety of sizes but with them being adjustable you should be able to get one to fit Barney easily. We are only on the second one....

I can't remember what make these are, but I know the small one wouldn't fit Nudge now, although it adjusted quite a lot.
You can see the seatbelt accessory on Molly's side. The ezydog one is very similar as far as I recall.

monkey see monkey do!! I really miss the puppy stage. so puppy broody now
