Can a Puppy be taken out before his Injections

Hi,
Our Puppy Murphy is coming to live with us shortly and when he arrives he will be 8 weeks old and will have had his first injections.

My question is it safe for us to take him out to our local park providing he doesn't come into contact with other dogs before his second set of injections? The park is quite and I am reasonably confident we would not come across other dogs. I would not take him out for a long time just 15 - 20 minutes maximum.

What do you all advise?

The rule of thumb for exercise is 5 minutes per month old, so at five months old, my pup normally goes out for around 25 minutes.

I always take my pups out before their second vacs, but always in my arms, with no contact with other dogs. After the second vaccination, my vet recommended giving it another week or two (I think it was two) before we could start going out for exercise.

Mine do not have vaccinations and are out from day one ... very much personal choice and I made this choice after MUCH careful thought.

Why is this Muddiwarx?
Do the injections carry a risk for the Puppy? we are new to dog ownership, having had Cats for over 25 years.

Our vet and most of our experienced doggy friends told us that it was fine to let a young pup come into contact with other dogs that you know are fully vaccinated. So inviting friends with dogs to your house is a great way to socialise the pup nice and early. We had a couple of doggy parties in between the first and second injections.

Going out and coming into contact with the ground is not generally advised until after the second injections. My vet told us this time to wait a week after the second injection. This is the 'official' advise.

But when we got our first pup last year a different, more experienced vet from the same practice told us that it was pretty safe to let them out and about in safe areas earlier than that. She said that there were no known outbreaks of the viruses at that time and provided we avoided places where sick dogs are likely to frequent it would be fine. A lot of experienced dog owner friends also say the day after the second set of injections is fine. I can't recall whether the vet was saying that in practice it's *probably* safe between injections or whether she only meant immediately after the second. Now please don't act on what I'm telling you our vet said as it was a year ago and we decided to play it safe with our first pup and waited the full week. I may have remembered the details incorrectly!

We took our second to puppy classes a few days after his 2nd injections but left the park outing until the full week. He's had plenty of socialisation at home so we decided to err on the side of caution.

It's a tough decision. Early socialisation is so very important to your dog's future development, but you don't want to put him at risk. I know some puppy classes take them as soon as they've had their first injections.

From a personal choice i wouldn't put a puppy on the ground until fully vaccinated. I defo carry it and introduce it to as many things as you can noice wise, transport wise and meeting people etc.,
Some people don't have vaccinations but that is the personal choice, I do. I'bve seen distemper and the way the dog fits resulting in loss of life, and although it is said that there is no guarantee even with vaccines they can not catch it or Parvo, it is IMO a help.

Hope you enjoy your Puppy

A pup is most at risk in the days after vaccination.....

Carrying your pup anywhere and everywhere is fine. Your pup is fine to meet already vaccinated dogs in your garden/house.

Please remember that pups are vaccinated with very good reason, parvo and the other diseases kill in a painful and horrendous manner.

I take mine out to get socialised by carrying them and not going anywhere near any dogs, just in case.

I definitely would never chance letting them walk on the ground until their complete vaccination course is over - to me it just isn't worth the risk.

My eldest Chi (two next week) was so tiny, I was advised not to have her vaccinated until she gained some weight. I took her absolutely everwhere with me but never let her get down anywhere. Took peepads out with me if I was gonna be out for any time and put them down in the boot of the car for her to pee on. She is the most dog-friendly of my six dogs. Yet she never encountered another dog until she was four months.
