How do you convert to MP3?

Is there a way to do this in Windows?

I want to copy a load of cds to play in a Sony Walkman that plays mp3 but the software that came with it (it's an older version of SonicStage Simple Burner) isn't working properly with Vista (it shows an error in creating an image).

Is there any good freeware out there that would do it?

Use Windows Media Player to rip the cd's but make sure under preferences you have the format mp3 selected like in this pic...
