My dog has dandruff, how can i stop it?

My lurcher gets very bad dandruff when brushed and after baths. Does anyone know how to cure it? Could i use human head and shoulders shampoo?

You need to treat it from the inside A little oil in his food (flaxseed oil, EPO, olive oil, fish body oil) should help. Add sardines to his meal occasionally, also raw egg.

I would not use a shampoo designed for humans - it may be too harsh on his skin.

Hi,
Coaltar & sulphur is a good shampoo to use if dogs have a dandruffy coat.
Also try giving oil of evening primrose oil in with his meal. i was recommended this by my vet when amy was suffering with her coat condition. started of with 1000mg a day till it started to clear & now she gets 500mg a day to help keep condition.

at the moment she is back up to 1000mg as she is moulting really badly

Ingestion of pure eucalyptus oil can cause toxicity. It is good diluted for external use but not to be fed or used where the dog can lick it off.

Fish body oil is far preferable to liver oil. The liver of fish stores toxins, not all of which can be removed by processing.

Also dandruff is not always food related. Syd had Dandruff and coat thinning back in January. The cause remains a mystery to this day. The vet agreed his diet was very rich in all the necessary oils. Did a skin scrape and found zilch. He was given an additional food supplement and dandruff shampoo (sebomild p ) and it would improve and then deteriorate again. It is now back to normal but that is since we stopped the extra supplement and have stopped shampooing. Can only assume it would have got better of its own accord. We shall never know.

Omega 3 Fish Body Oil capsules from the chemist/health food shop will be fine for him. Vitamin E is also very good for the skin and should always be given in conjunction with the Fish Oils anyhow as the fish oils make Vit E less available to the body. 200iu of Vit E per day should be sufficient for a lurcher.

I have had this problem with Deccy all the time I have had him.
Reading the replies on this thread, I realised that for years, I gave Evening Primrose Oil to my dogs for their coats, but for reasons I can't even remember, I stopped doing it.
Still, checking out my cupboards revealed a large bottle of the capsules still in date, so I have had Deccy on 2 a day (2 x 500mg) and after a week - it's virtually gone!
Thanks for reminding me about it!
